Biography

Kelly Monteith is an American lyric-coloratura soprano from Williamsburg, VA who has performed with organizations and venues all over the world, from the Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall to various historic theaters and castles in Emilia-Romagna, Italy. Her voice has been described as “mesmerizing” with “entrancing vocal acrobatics” (shakespearances.com).

As an opera singer, Kelly was most recently seen in Shakespeare Opera Theatre’s production of Much Ado About Nothing + Béatrice et Bénédict in the role of Héro. Other professional credits include soprano chorister in Opera Baltimore and Opera Delaware’s joint 2023 production of La Traviata. Kelly graduated from Temple University in May 2023 with a Master of Music in Vocal Performance, where she studied with Dr. Kathryn Leemhuis. During her time at Temple, she sang Barbarina in Le Nozze di Figaro, and covered the role of Almera in Nico Muhly’s Dark Sisters. Additional past credits include the role of Celia in Händel’s Silla with Chicago Summer Opera, Susanna (cover) in Le Nozze di Figaro, and the role of Annabel in the European premiere of Paul Richard’s Mondo Novo at the 2022 Vienna Summer Music Festival.

Kelly’s sacred and concert repertoire includes various polyphonic masses and motets by Palestrina, Byrd, and other Renaissance composers. She has also sung as the soprano soloist in excerpts from Messiah, Carmina Burana, Bach’s Mass in B Minor, Charpentier’s In nativitatem Domini canticum, and Bernstein’s Chichester Psalms.

Kelly enjoys singing repertoire outside of the traditional canon and recently performed a recital of all women composers, featuring song cycles by Clara Schumann, Libby Larsen, and Lili Boulanger, as well as various songs by Pauline Viardot, Settimia Caccini, and Isabella Colbran. She also recently collaborated with mandolin player Gabriel Locati to record arrangements of Schubert, Weber, Haydn, and Mozart songs for mandolin and soprano.
